Album cover illustration based off the psychedelic movement of the 60’s and more specifically.

This design came from a page layout and design class. I based this design on the psychedelic movement of the 60s and, more specifically, Victor Moscoso. The project was to choose a design movement and create an album cover that follows the characteristics of that movement. Victor Moscoso was a psychedelic print designer from the 1960s and ’70s based in the movement’s hub in San Francisco. He created many famous designs, including festival prints, concert posters, and album covers. He was famous for using bright neon colors, wavy shapes and typography. When combined, the two often create optical illusions that confuse viewers, causing them to investigate further to understand what they are viewing entirely. His style was a massive contributor to the culture of the 60s and the iconic visuals of the psychedelic movement. I chose to recreate A$SAP Rocky’s most recent album, ‘Testing’ because the album represented many of the same themes as the psychedelic movement. Rocky, and especially this album, often embodied psychedelics, admitting to their contribution to the album’s production and their ability to test new ideas, view things from different perspectives, and break all the rules. I used Rocky’s portrait and a test dummy made to look like him as the primary graphics for this album, along with a variation between the test dummy logo and the famous swirl Moscoso often used to create the cover. Using strong, bright, and contrasting colors and a 60’s psychedelic font, I tried replicating his style, joining the two artists’ similar characteristics into one visual piece.
